Community Builder of the Year

4RM+ULA

James Garrett, Jr., Erick Goodlow, Nathan Johnson

4RM+ULA is a design architecture firm founded on a powerful mission: to create better environments for underserved communities through artistic, community-driven design. Since its inception, the firm has lived its mission by leaving a clear impression on many of our communities.

“We value spaces and use them in ways that are often unimagined – blending artistic innovation with functional solutions,” said Nathan Johnson, partner and architect. Nathan, along with partners, James Garrett, Jr. and Erick Goodlow, all have familial roots and intertwining friendships that go back generations in St. Paul’s Rondo neighborhood. When the historically Black community was targeted for demolition in the 1950s/1960s to allow for construction of Interstate 94, their families were devastated and displaced.

They made a lasting impression on the community by designing the Rondo Commemorative Plaza, transforming the vacant site of a historic building into a welcoming tribute to the old neighborhood. The firm has created other similar commemorative tributes, including the Philando Castile Peace Garden, Juxtaposition Skate-able Art Plaza, Minnesota Latino Museum, and community engagement supporting George Floyd Square. Their artistic representations can be seen across the Twin Cities at Target Field Station, all the stations along the Green Line LRT, and Great River Landing.

“We feel a sense of pride in creating spaces that restore legacies - spaces that are once again used by the community and families.”

Their success did not come without struggles. “In 2017 we were trying to scale our business and couldn’t get a loan,” said James. “MEDA saw our work as an asset to the community and supported us with critical capital when no one else did. This made a significant difference, as it allowed us to grow and take on more meaningful projects,” Erick said.

Today, 4RM+ULA stands as a firm not just talking about its vision, but actively living it –designing with purpose, honoring history, and building spaces where communities can thrive.
